New Homebuyers 101 Class

They Don’t Teach You This in School!

With class graduates and weddings abounding this time of year, the question comes to my mind….Why are marriage and ‘moving’ aka house buying, never taught in school? Not even college to my knowledge! Why is that? I mean, aren’t these two things some of the largest and most expensive contracts you encounter?

For this reason, I have partnered with other local industry professionals to offer a Homebuyers 101 course. This is a free event on June 11, 2024 located in Murray Utah. Hopefully it becomes an annual event!

Financial Education in Schools

My belief is that we need educated and informed buyers, and sellers for a healthy community. Schools are starting to introduce some financial literacy education. For example, I and other parents volunteer at my local Elementary School that participates in the Junior Achievement Program. I highly endorse Junior Achievement. This program explains credit, needs vs wants, budgeting and many other core financial skills to children. However, this is only 4 hours of training in the entire year, and many middle schools and highschools do not offer the program. Much of the financial education takes place in the home, which sadly many parents don’t have the time or knowledge themselves to help.

Even in the best of this financial teaching programs, home buying is rarely touched on. But ironically, highschool and college graduates are expected to blindly make one of the biggest purchases of their lives based on ‘blind faith’. My mentality is, that the education system won’t be able to help, and most buyers are left to their own research or the mercy of their real estate agent. The homebuyers don’t even know how to tell the difference between a knowledgable and ineffective agent, but yet, put all their trust that the transaction with execute properly. That is why a course like this is necessary, and should be put on often if possible.

What real estate professionals can do to educate their community

I would greatly recommend that other real estate agents and professionals do something similar in the community they serve. If you don’t have a location, ask if a school, church, or other charity would provide a location to have a quick 1-2 hour class. Even posts, or social media that gives some quick point of consideration are helpful. The knowledge that you can provide in that short time could be life changing for those future home owners!

I will keep you posted on how this event turns out!
